Gas prices are changing lives
Saturday, May 10, 2008
The Californian -- These days, Adriana Peña of Soledad is getting creative about ways to cope with alarming gas prices. She stopped Friday to fill up her car - a Honda Accord - at the Arco gas station on South Sanborn Road, one of the stations with the cheapest gas prices in Salinas. But the effort doesn't stop there. "I drive to Salinas for everything, since Soledad, where we live, doesn't have much in services," said Peña. "Because gas is so expensive, I try to get all my errands, like doctor's appointments, shopping, done in one day." Peña's lifestyle change correlates to new federal data and a USA Today/Gallup Poll that shows record-breaking gas prices have curbed driving nationwide. That's a first in nearly 30 years.

Of course we all need to change how we drive and use fuel. I think that is the real reason for the increase. Wouldn't our world be better in the long run if we weren't so dependent on driving everywhere. It is idealistic at this point that we all could use public transportation or walk/bike to school, work, shops, ect. Our country isn't set up that way. When was the last time anyone walked to a corner store for a loaf of bread at a Mom & Pop store? That world doesn't exist any more for most of us in this country. Our family is thinking of relocating and if we do that is the kind of area we will look for.

I'd already changed my driving, to combine trips. Now at least 4 errands in one trip or I wait another day. But as we conserve Oil companies will just come up with another excuse to keep the prices going up. We need fuel cells now!!!

You bet people - well those of us on the wrong end of that ever widening rich and poor class barrier - are changing their lives because of this BS...speculators...corrupt politicians...increased world demand...narrowing profit margins at the refineries...BS - just propoganda...

"Yes, but the Republic of California is enjoying that 64 cents per gallon in taxes she is paying on the fuel she just pumped."

18.4 cpg does not go to CA it goes to Fed's to repair roads.

Oil prices are probably going up because they expect to get all of the stimulus CHECKS.

I like that this person has changed her habbits, but this is only a start. Next week, why doesn't she take her neighbor with, It's company for the ride, plus the neighbor can shop too. This way they are only taking one fuel effecient car instead of two people driving.

well we have plenty of oil plenty of refined fuel and yet the price goes up anyone see the problem ? so until legislation is made to stop this then we will all suffer and businesss will continue to miss forecasts and continue to close this happens everytime we have a republican admin. just look at history the stimulus package was for big oil not for us look at fuel prices just in time for the package come on people wake up and see what is going on
